Silencers

Hi, I know this totally sounds like a newbie question but I was wondering if silencers for airsoft guns muffle the sounds of shots at all? I realize most of the sound is coming from the gearbox and not the actual firing of the bb in the chamber, are there kits you can buy that act as a dampener for this if the silencer is only for show?

Muffle yes, Silence, No. The bulk of the noise is from the gearbox, the only think you will muffle is the pop from the piston. I worked on a P90 that was pretty damn quiet to begin with after a good shim and lube job, pop the silencer on and it was night and day, very neat effect.

For the most part, they are used to hide a lengthened inner barrel.

also to my knowledge a silencer that works is illegal because with minor modifications it can be adapter for real gun use

The airsoft silencers do not act at all like real silencers. If you put an airsoft silencer on a real gun, you'd be in for a surprise.

My understanding is that the foam filled ones are illegal in the states because of the wording of the law, it is along the lines of: It is illegal to alter the muzzle report of any firearm with a muzzle attachment without a license etc etc... This applies to Real guns, airguns, and paintball.

Canadian law is a bit different. I don't know why, but it's not illegal to have mock suppressors with foam filling.

Silencers work for snipers and possibly Gbb pistols but realy there for looks on Aeg's, and lessen the sound of the muzzle to a slight difference. If you want to silence your gearbox i hear many people use some foam paper base and stuff them in the body, also properly shim/ etc.

The largest difference I've noticed is on Tokyo Mauri NBB MK23's, since there's no blow back there's no mechanical noise to worry about. Anyone that's heard one of these with/without the silencer attached knows what I mean.

Depends on the gun. Like Renegade) said. A suppressor on a P90 is very effective (especially if you fill the battery compartment with a sock). I've seen suppressors made specifically for airsoft guns (as in the baffles in the suppressor were designed for it) and it was incredebly useful. They don't silence the gun so much as change the sound to make it hard to figure out where it's coming from (which is exactly what a real suppressor is suppose to do).

On other guns, they don't do much.
