Hello, and I need some help

Hello airsoft canada,

Hello to any one who reads this, I seem to have my self in a bit of a problem,
I have found out, I am underage, and not supposed to own an airsoft gun. I got an airsoft gun becase I wanted to get better at shooting, Im with the "air cadets" of canada, and we use pellet rifles, so I told my mom "could I get some sort of gun to practise with" and she said yes, so I was happy. So we went to wal-mart and picked up an M4A1 from Panther Arms, and I setup a small fireing range in my basement, and got out my dads saftey glasses. So I was wondering that was this thing that I had, so I decided to read the packageing it came in, and it said "airsoft gun" so I went and googled "Whats Airsoft?" along with "what are airsoft gun laws" because I didnt know if they were legal or not. So my search led me to here. So I was reading around on here and found out that airsoft is a sport, so I wanted to get into this sport, and got out my olive green combats that I use for cadets, and got some patches off ebay and a vest and the saftey gear, So then I came back here and was looking around on how to goto games, the rules etc, and found out you have to be 18+ or 16 depending on the feild owner, so then I was a bit sad, but I guess the rule is there for a good reason, or it wouldent be there at all. So currently im 15 going on 16 next year. My problem is, what do I do with my gun? Seeing as im underage, and not suppost to own it? should I lock it up? sell it? or keep target shooting in my basement? or wait until im 16/18? im sorta lost on what im suppost to do, and I dont want to get arrested, or give airsoft a bad name. any suggestions/comments would be nice thanks

Regards
Greg(cpgop)

P.S if it means any thing I live in ontario, and I feel bad now for being underage and owning one.

Hi Greg.

You can keep using it in your basement, that's not a problem as long as it's done safely. Just don't run around in your backyard or public property with it.

And always remember that parental consent and involvement is the cornerstone of minor airsoft use.

Well once you age out or w/e you can join in playing but for now just plink in the basement.

In regards to practicing. Do it with the Daisy rifles. That way you know how it works and switching between different rifles shouldn't be a problem (ie. the difference between driving a Van and a Sedan, you have to get used to it). If you shot with Anschutz air rifles (ie. a sports car) for a few years it would probably feel weird to change over to a daisy rifle (ie. a cheaper rust bucket daily driver) so at least try to keep it in the same style so that you're more familiar with the type of rifle (ie. not much difference between a Toyota Corolla, and a Honda Civic but it's a huge jump when you've been driving mustangs all your life and were forced to drive something like an AE86).

The model you want is the "Daisy Avanti Legend EX" IIRC that's the closest to the one you'll use at competition.

As for playing underage, it's really at the field owners discretion, we have no say if the field owner were to let 6 year olds play (his insurance policy might but for all we care it's their business and we don't want to impose on their business). Anyways, contact a local club and maybe you can be an observer for a day and introduce yourself or they might even let you play with them if you ask nicely.

EDIT: Read you were from Ontario.... Not a good thing cause from what I know provincial bylaw states you have to be 18 to buy (elsewhere in Canada there is no such rule however most stores do set their own policy, but not many follow it).

You sound like you've got a good head on your shoulders

Keep that up and the community would be more than happy to accommodate you when you become of age.

L473ncy - I was looking at that model, I just gatta come up with some money to buy it, im sorta broke right now.

As for going to watch games, I'd love to do that, I think I will contact some of the people hosting games, and see if I can come out and watch, who knows they might let me play. I also might learn somethings, and lern more about how games work, so I wont be a total "noob" at the sport.

Amos - Thanks for the comment, I'm just trying to do the right thing, the rules wouldent be there if there wassent a good reason behind them, Im trying not to end up like some "noob" who goes and buys a gun, then rants about being underage and how he/she cant attend games,

You will likely need to bring a parent, even if you just want to watch. Someone will have to be able to take legal responsibility for you, even if you do not play. The best way to ensure that the host will permit you to attend will be if your parent(s) attend.

In addition, most minor players in Ontario got to play mainly as a result of their parents being active, respected players. Game hosts are much, much more understanding about minors when the minor is the son or daughter of a good airsofter.

By that, do they just have to come to the game, and wait until its over, or would they actualy have to play?

They just need tro sign a consent form and be present. This waives liability of the airsoft field should a minor be injured on the premises.

I might add; although it may be tempting, don't brag that you own it. Your friends may think it's cool, but I'm sure their parents will hear the word "gun" and hit the fan. Same goes for teachers, etc. Best to keep it quiet.

That being said, this is probably the best newbie post I've seen, and as Amos said, I'm sure you have a good head on your shoulders. Keep it up, and I'm sure you will be welcomed into the Ontario Airsoft Community with open arms.

Edit: Damn, this is making me wanna play. Stupid ankle.

Thanks for the kind comments. As for the bragging, I dont think I would, because they might say somthing to there parents, and there parents might get the police at the door, and I dont want that to happen.

Also, I found somthing to use my OD with, "nerf" yes, nerf, my friend said its very fun with "moded" guns so I think I might paint some that I have, and go try it out with him and his friends until i'm 16/18 who knows, might be good trainning.

Im gonna echo the fact that you seem to be the smartest newbie we've had in a long time. Use this time you have until you turn old enough for the local field owners/hosts feel comfortable enough to let you play. Ask the ones in your area what you will need to do to be a spectator and whatnot. Where abouts in Ontario are ya? If your in the GTA this will be your best bet as there are 1-5 games a week in various venues (private fields, paintball arenas, specialized CQB facilities). Also make sure to read all the stickies throughout the forum as they have been stickies there so that they are always right there for new people and veterans alike. Try to do some research via the search bars at the top and stickies before making a thread, and from the sounds of it this won't be much of a problem for you.

Also don't listen to anything Ronan says. Hes a necrophiliac.

Well I normally would suggest you come to the TWAT field since your in the West but we have a general rule of 19+ for our games. Unless things have changed, try PM'ing Schwag or Mephisto42 when we get games running again.
