TM SR-16 locks up on semi-auto
Every once in a while my SR-16 locks up on semi-auto. I can pull the trigger back just a tiny bit then it stops. I need to put it on full auto and fire before semi-auto works again. How can I fix this problem?

i had a gun do that before, it ended up the motor was wearing down, theres no real way to test for that other than replacing and seeing if it happens again.

Okay now it just did it on full auto mode. I've been firing this gun through maybe 500 rounds today to test out ranges and zero in my optics. So does this happen when the battery is dead or is some toast internally?

Does the trigger PHYSICALLY stop or does it go all the way but the motor can't cycle the gun? If the trigger can be pulled back all the way but the gun doesn't cycle it could be a motor or battery problem. Ensure your battery is fully charged as sometimes the motor can't draw enough current to cycle the gun when it's dying. If the trigger physically can't be pulled (like the safety is engaged), then the safety is probably worn and may need to be replaced. Alternatively it can be removed altogether but remember you'll have no safety on your gun and you have to be careful.

I can pull the trigger back about halfway then it stops and I can't pull it any further.

Sounds like the safety is stuck or the selector switch didn't move it enough. Fixing it shouldn't be too hard but if you're not confident taking your rifle apart you may want to take it to a gunsmith. If you want to attempt taking it apart have a look at the V2 gearbox videos at http://www.mechbox.com. Good place to start.

When the safety is on I can't pull the trigger at all. But when with this problem I can move it a little. Could it still be a safety problem?

Yeah. The safety is not the most elegant thing...basically it's a little plastic bar that's swung up inside the mechbox and physically blocks the trigger from completeting the electrical connection.
It can get hung up for a bunch of different reasons. Basically, it sounds like yours is not flicking enough out of the way. You can't force it...it'll just mess up the little plastic bar more. |

Okay thanks. I just bought this gun used today and now I already have to take it apart and fix something. Not the greatest start for an airsoft career.

Hahaha (good natured laughing...not, "I'm laughing at you")....welcome to airsoft.
Some guns go tens of thousands of rounds...some don't make it through a couple of mags... Some break as soon as they're fixed...with others you can almost toss all the spare parts into a shake&bake bag and come out with a world-beater rifle. Sorry to hear of your bad luck...don't give up, Best of luck, Tys |

So after I take the gun apart, what am I supposed to change? Since I don't know what it is supposed to look like I don't know what I'm supposed to fix.

Common problem, cause is found about 6 inches behind the rear sight................
What you need to do is fully depress the trigger for every single action shot, otherwise you only partially cycle the mechbox and full auto is the only way to unfuck it. You are causing the problem, not the gun. I've seen this lots, is just a matter of training yourself to full stroke the trigger on semi. Is rather like those that shoot pistols like the Beretta 92 and other autos, limp wristing the gun will cause jams and malfunctions because the support isn't there enough for it to work efficiently. If pulling all the way back doesn't fix the problem, then like it has something to do with the trigger contact block inside the mechbox |

Means find out if the problem is you or the gun. Then we go farther. Quite a few guys that have Armalites, namely the SR-16, found that by not pulling the trigger back right, only halfway, causes the gun to stop shooting and only a full auto cycle will fix it. And if anything to do with the selector plate, likely full mechbox opening is required, can't take it off otherwise.
