Tightbore acting as a "widebore"...

Ok, so a few months ago one of the first upgrade I did to my CA36 was a Classic Army 6.04mm High Precision stainless steel inner barrel (at this point CA was the only company that made a tightbore in 494mm length). The first few games I played with it I didn't overly notice imporved accuracy, but I figured "Hey, it's a tightbore, so I must just be shooting like shit."

However, at a Wasaga games earlier this month I was playing with an MS100SP shooting .25's.. my gun chronied at 205 (seemed low to me), I needed a good amount of hop ( > 50%), and to hit a target at 50-60 feet took me 10+ rounds. Before Border Wars I did some accuracy testing and found that at a range of anout 15ft my gun was getting grouping of 2-2.5 inches. I replaced the tightbore with the stock barrel and the groupings fell to 3/4". The sound of the gun changed too (quieter). I dialed in my hopup at Border War before the game to around the same setting, and was getting SHIT range (30-40ft max). I found that this was far too much hop, and my range went to what I would consider "normal" at about 20% hop shooting .25s. After playing the game, I can say that my gun is far more accurate WITHOUT the tightbore.

I figure I had an airleak around the nozzel and the hopup with the tightbore, which would explain the crappy range, but I can't figure out what would cause the massive loss of accuracy (especially at the 15ft I did the test with) with a more accurate barrel?

could it be a flaw in the barrel? such as a small hole? that would attest to the crappy range and accuracy. Get a prometheus barrel. i have not read a single bad comment about them.

Doubt it could be a hole in the barrel. I was wondering more if there were some rough spots on the inside causing friction with the BB and making it spin every which way. Unfortunetly prometheus doesn't make a G36 length barrel.

Could be as simple as a bad hopup rubber, or you may not have installed it properly.
Sometimes tightbores can be improperly manufactured, it's rare but it's possible.
What kind of hopup rubber are you using?

well on 007 airsoft, they sell prometheus barrels and they say that the pricing varies by length. does that not mean that they custom cut it for you? or do i have it wrong?

I'm using the stock rubber, but I examined it before I did my little "test" (and again when I changed barrels) and it seems fine. If the rubber was shot though I don't think I get such an increase in performance on the stock barrel after removing the tightbore. The length of the two barrels is different by about 0.5 - 1mm, a very minute amount, could that make a difference?

No, it means that a barrel for like a PSG-1 is more expensive than one for an MP5k. Cutting down barrels is very difficult without the proper tools. I don't think any retailers do it.

Did you inspect the barrel for crud? Back in ASCA days we bought some CA tightbores to see if they were any good. I gave up on them as they had the tendancy to pick up schmoo from the bbs. It seemed as if the bbs were melting leaving long streaks of white residue on the inside. I sawed one barrel in half to see what the streaks looked like and found they peeled off like stretched teflon tape floss.

The CA hopup rubbers aren't that great, and hopup rubbers make a huge difference on the performance of you gun. The guarder or systema hopup rubbers are a good upgrade.

Hmm, my barrel may have what you describe. There are white streaks leading back from the business end toward the beginning of the barrel. If I look into the barrel from the hopup end it looks like there are scatches or something protruding very slightly at the other end of the barrel.

That will probably be my next purchase for this gun.
