Tan and Coyote Brown, the diff?
I'm having a lot of troubles finding consistent photos of Tan equipment and coyote Brown equipment. Either there too bright due to flash or bad lighting, different materials, or simply their just a different shade. Ive also noticed manufacturers calling Tan equipment CB, and vice versa. Another peculiarly thing
is that there Unbelievable Bright tans, and almost mud brown CBs. So my question is, what would be a good rule of thumb, or for anyone who owns both of each equipment, a pic for comparison. I can Krylon the gear to adjust the tint as i want, so in the long run im not to worried. *sorry for my frequent threads on gear lately, the fact that i cant change thread titles anymore means i cant cluster my questions together...so my apoligies. |

Different manufacturers will call their particular shade of khaki/tan/coyote the same name. Some even give their shades special names, like Wheat.
All you need to know is that it all refers to the same sand-like colour that is presently best-suited for operations in sandboxes like Afghanistan and Iraq. In a day or so of operational use, the sand and other environmental elements will homogenize the colours into the colour commonly referred to as "BTDT". If you're looking for the same shade from kit to pouches, then you're better off buying all the same manufacturer, as every manufacturer will have at least a slight difference in shade. IMHO, buy the kit that suits your needs. Don't worry about the shade-matching of what is essentially the same fundamental colour.

Actually, Groom has been drinking the egg nog a little too much.
There is Coyote Tan and Coyote Brown..usually the brown is actually darker, for example, the Coyote Brown vests etc that the US Marines wear. Coyote tan is lighter... ...but as groom says, it can still very by brand.

USMC CB is a very particular color, SDS makes pouches in that color, and lots is just issued stuff made for usmc. its darker and its the "true CB". in most cases CB is a color very close to khaki ( example- Eagle) and is more of what i would call "coyote tan" like SINN said

This isn't the best showing of desert tan..but you can see the guys on the left are wearing coyote brown and the guy on the far right has the normal Coyote tan such like regular Eagle gear..

your's is closer to desert tan (which is mint with 3 colour desert DCU's). It's slightly lighter than Coyote Tan..perfect to match ACU etc. Will also work fine with Multlicam..so you are good to go..
next time take a look at what US army guys wear for boots (tan) and what US Marines wear for boots (Coyote Brown)...that will show some colour shades too.. confused yet haha..have a good new year!

Bruce, that's an awesome resource.
KG3, in the end it really doesn't matter if your pouches and vest are off by a few shades or tones. It's all doing basically the same job either way, and I'm sure even the most professional special ops soldier doesn't really care if his dump pouch is lighter than his mag pouch and vice-versa. |
