KSC Glock 19: Hop-up unit and inner barrel screwed? (with pics!)
My KSC G19 is shooting like crap. Plain and simple. It's not that it's inaccurate, it's just extremely inconsistent. Some shots are perfect. The BB's fly extremely straight for about 30-40 feet, then travel slightly upwards as the hop-up spin takes over the ballistics of the BB. With maybe a 6-inch horizontal (left or right) deviation at 50-60 feet.
However, this is a rare occurance, with maybe 1 out of 4 shots behaving this well. Every other shot is totally random: they spin wildly out of control in a random horizontal direction, drop too quickly, spin way too high up, etc. The BB's seem to favor a horizontal deviation most of the time they deviate at all. This happens with a slow fire (5-6 seconds between shots) of KSC Perfect 0.25g BB's shot with Coleman propane. So naturally, I think the hop-up is causing this inconsistency, as I have a good clean inner barrel with no wobble (fixed with electrical tape). I open the gun up and pull out the inner barrel / hop-up assembly: Attached are 5 pictures of the assembly. I have 2 questions: 1) It looks like the hop-up unit is damaged or frayed or something. Notice that the edges are all jagged and look almost serrated. The surface of the hop-up is not smooth at all. You can see this best in pictures 1, 2, and 4. Question: Is this jagged hop-up normal, or is it a flaw? Does it need to be replaced? 2) It also looks like I have a rogue piece of plastic right where the inner barrel connects to the hop up, most likely a manufacturing defect when the mold was cast. It's kind of like a little "ledge" poking out into the middle of the barrel. You can see it slightly in picture 3, but best in picture 5. It's in the lower-right hand corner of the inner barrel unit when viewed from an upright position, like it would be when you're firing the gun. Question: My knowledge of this part of the gun is limited, so I want to know if that little piece of plastic is supposed to be there. Is it, or do I need to shave it off / buy a new inner barrel? If any of this is confusing, please let me know so I can clarify. I know this gun can perform better than it is. And of course, thanks for the help.

Only thing I can think of offhand is: How easy do your BBs go into the mag? Am thinking about other things, but some (ok, quite a few) KSC mags have feed lips that are too tight, and when you shove in the BBs, dents and cuts appear on the surface, which will cause BBs to go every which way without any consistancy. Also, inside the feedlips, if it's sharp there the same thing will occur.
Will keep reading what you wrote and see if I can come up with something else. Trying to follow it correctly. |

I found that eh isnide edges of my KJW M700 sniper rifle mags were sharp, and made little cuts in my BBs, causing them to veer here there & everywhere. Recently I found that a couple of my 6 G19 mags were doing about the same, add in were damn hard to get the BBs in, so I figured I'd mention it to you. Used my Gerber diamond coated needle file to open the feed lips up and smooth the insides. BBs drop right in, I can hold the follower down and BBs will nicely roll out with a little touch of my finger.
As far as your pics go, looks normal to me (mine look the same). |

You have that same "lip" of plastic at the beginning of your inner barrel?

Plastic or rubber lip? I think I do, I'll have to check both my G19s when I get home to confirm.

Are you sure you can see the lip I'm talking about?

Oh. Don't think either of mine have that. Wonder what it is and if it IS affecting your accuracy.

You can see it in some of the other pictures too; maybe that will help you out some. Do you think it's the inner barrel or the hop up unit? I'll be getting a tightbore barrel soon anyway, so I hope it's that...

The upper area where I expect to see your hop-up appears smooth. It appears as though your inner barrel has rotated roughly 120 degrees clockwise causing the 'bump' you notice which I'm hypothesizing is your hop-up rubber. Take a look at this picture of one of my G19 inner barrels. Notice the hop-up bump at 12 o'clock.
