Throat Mic

I'm sure it's in another thread, and I apologize in advance...

I was thinking about switching to a throat mic, just curious what everyone else uses, what works well and doesn't etc. I use the cheaper single prong FRS radios, but thinking of upgrading that as well. Any suggestions?

Communications - Applied Technologies LASH.

I got it for a steal off ebay. It's a $600USD unit.

You might want to try one of those IASUS units though.

yes, it's the one that stick to your eyelash. Use Loreal stuff to make it stick better!

LASH is the real steel version that work underwater....
The IASUS work great, but take the 2 sensors versions if you want to be understood.

The cool factor asside, you don't really need the troat mic since we don't operate in high noise environnement.

I use the OTTO Tactical Throat Mic
I replaced the standard ear bud with a Skeleton Ear piece.
Much better

http://www.botac.com/ottacthroatm.html

Probably the clearest and best that I have tried.
Pricey, but well worth it

IMO, all the $600 comm units aren't worth it for airsoft. A simple boom mic setup works. I use the mic+earpiece combo. You can find them at pretty much all Radio Shacks. It's been 6 years since i've been to future shop (i live in America now), but i'm pretty sure they probably have some hands free stuff for radios. The Pryme Gladiator is a great throat mic for airsoft. $100 isn't too bad for it. The only beef i have with throat mics is that they can't pick up mouth generated sounds well (like S or V). This is what i use now in my old General Electric FRS radio (still saving for a GMRS) http://www.radioshack.com/product.as...%5Fid=19%2D315
That setup is cheap and effective. Hasn't failed me yet. The only problem is the earpiece. It's kinda uncomfortable after a few hours if it doesn't fit your ear just right. However, if you really want a throat mic, Pryme Gladiator, some Iasus models, and Firefox (cheap as it is, it works) work fine for airsoft. Oh yeah, this recently came out in the US. http://www.airsoftgi.com/product_inf...roducts_id=980

I think it's an imitation of what ILLusion reccommended, but from what i've heard, it works great. I hope this helps.

i'd suggest finding the set up that's best for you. i've tried the boom style and the the iasus sniper. both work well but they both have they're flaws. i'd suggest finding something that's comfortable for your set up. your ears size, shape and postitioning on your head make a world of differance when looking at an "over the ear" boom style headset in terms of comfort and stability. then there's how thick your neck is and how well you fit and secure a throat mic to function the way it's designed to. also consider how the wiring set up is in terms of all the points that the rig will touch your gear....radio postion on rig...location of ptt...running of wires...tention of wire leading to thoat mic pickup.

Actually my throat mic is by far the clearest of the high end ones I have tried or used. I have never had a problem transmitting sounds such as "S and V".

In the end you get what you pay for.
I don't use a cheap radio and won't use a cheap headset for it.
Not worth it. I prefer quality equipment over using gear that "may" fail, as it is not really built well.

Thnx for the input guys, main reason for going throat mic btw was because I don't like having the microphone on my face, but we'll see how it goes.

Another option is to go with the TCI SAS mic setup

http://www.merchantmanager.com/tacti...rods=SAS_D_***

I have one as well.
Works really well and allows you to move your head just with the earpiece in
and nothing more.

Actually, I hate having things in my peripheral vision, and I can see past 180 degrees, and I work with a boom-mic headset all day every day at work, I don't mind it at all, you get used to it and get it arrainged on your head right and you don't even know it's there. I would say a throat mic might bother you more being that it's tight around your neck, my cousin despises them, I don't mind them... it's all personal preference, if you've never tried a throat mic, I'd reccomend trying one first before you go out and buy one to find out you hate it.

Is that so?

Well, the people that told me that must have been dealing with low end throat mics. Anyway, being 14, i lack the necessary funds to afford a high end radio AND comm setup. But i've had my radioshack headset for about 6 months and it works perfectly. Whatever works for you is the best.

Again, for airsoft, the $300+ comm setups are overkill. Why pay that much when you can get something for 1/3 of the price that works more than well enough for airsoft and won't break down? Not that i don't appreciate quality equipment. You'll never see me running with cheapo stuff that doesn't hold up. I only wish i could afford to pay $300+ for a good comm setup.

As i said before, just get whatever works for you.

$300 overkill? Lol, you haven't been in airsoft very long have ya mate. So then what about $400+ on an EOTECH scope, or $200+ on a Magpul M4 stock?? You think it was over kill to spend $400 on a Callahan/Hellcat plate carrier chest rig too? It's all in the eye (and bank roll) of the beholder my friend.

I'm sure most things in airsoft are overkill for a 14yr old's allowance....not even sure why a 14yr old is playing airsoft, but that's a whole other dicsussion.

You are correct in that it is whatever works best for you. I've gone down the road of FRS, boom mics and cheap throat mics. Was an exercise in wasted money. UHF opened up a crystal clear world of comms and quality accessories that does make a huge difference, not to mention the added range of UHF or GMRS.

Most new players will start out with the "less expensive" route and go with FRS, which is a good place to start. But as your playing expecience grows, you might find there is a need to imporve on your comms gear, especially if you play on much larger fields where the small range of the FRS may not work too well. Guys like Illusion and Batman have been playing for many, many years and know what they are talking about. I think Bats has tried damn near every type of comms gear available at one point or another.
