Strange AK mag feeding problem..
So I have a brand new SRC AK74 (The AEG version). I bought a box of 5 MAG brand 100 rd midcaps, and all 5 of them won't feed right.
I'm getting basically zero feeding. When I remove the magazine I can see bb's in the hopup, but I guess there's too little spring force or something because it won't fire a single shot. The spring has tension that I can feel, I've already loaded and unloaded each magazine 2-3 times and oiled them too. I asked the oompa loompas but they didn't have anything constructive to say. Any ideas? |

I also have this problem with my ics ak-74 with two types of midcaps and its issued highcaps.
My buddies cyma highcap feeds it fine though. The cyma mag is the only mag that is snug in the magwell. I figured it was because my hopup needed to be replaced (maybe the loading nozzle was too short). |

You could try shaving down the BB retainers on the mags (just try it with one mag first). Your hopup probably doesn't reach down far enough to push it out of the way and let BB's up.

Well, like I said when I take the mag out there are bb's in the hopup. If I lightly push on them with my finger the gun feeds them.
I even put the gun on full auto, held the trigger down and wiggled it, pushed up, down, side to side, front to back, nothing. |

Still might be the problem I described.

Well I'll try anything at this point. The retainer is sort of wedge shaped, what surface do you suggest I shave? The top at the same angle, or should I just take a few thousandths off the tip?

run a file straight up and down right on the edge. Take off a tiny bit at a time and test. keep doing it until it feeds but make sure to not go too far as it will no longer retain the bbs.

Okay I figured out how to shave it down and I'm sad to say I took it all the way to the point where it would barely hold the bb's in place and it's still only feeding maybe 1 in 10.

If you look inside the hopup chamber, is the nozzle moving back and forth with each cycle of the mechbox?

when you look down into the feeding nozzle, what do you see? Also fire the gun a few time in semi as you look. See if the nozzle is clearing completely as this might be the cause.
Damn Styrak beat me to it. :P

Be careful what you tell people seeking advise. They don't know if youre an expert or misinformed or ignorant. In all seriousness, before shaving the retainer down anymore and risking permanently ruining your mag, try taking the spring out of the mag and putting it back in with a few bb's behind it to increase the potential energy it uses to load your them into your hopup.... If that doesnt fix it, then the problem may be in your gear box. http://www.mechbox.com/data/how-the-mechbox-works.html Look at the motion diagram there. Your AK might not have a ver2 gearbox (im not sure) but most gearboxes are essentially the same internally. See the black plate moving back and fourth, loading the bb's into the bucking? That's your tappet plate... It might be broken or not engaging on the sector gear properly. Try the bbs in the mag first. Last edited by EscapisT; June 14th, 2011 at 01:53.. |

Heh, tappet plate is fine, and I always wear eye protection around loaded/energized guns.
In any case my highcap feeds just fine and if I load the bb's into the hopup manually and push on them with my finger it fires them just fine. |

Take/send it to a gundoc.
We can usually diagnose a gun a whole lot faster in person. |

You should definitely try putting bbs behind your one of your mags' spring. If that's the issue it's worth a try.... If your highcap works then it might simply be a compatability issue.... my mags are m4 mags, but they didnt feed properly in my vfc hk416 because of a very slight difference in tolerance between the mag's catch and the magcatch in the magwell, which hold the mag up against the hopup. Mine was remedied by shaving the retainer clip, and I did ruin one of my midcaps in the process too. It's utterly useless now.
Shaving the retainer clip isn't working for you since the difference in tolerance is probably slightly larger than it was in my case. Try out some other ak mags at your next skirmish and have people try yours. |
