External cleaning of AEG

I'm not a newbie when I comes to firearms and there proper maintenance but new to airsoft. I've heard you need to use only a silicone based oil for the bore, but are there any restrictions on the external parts of the gun. I use an oil called break free on all my firearms and it works fantastic on metal parts. Will this cause damage to the gun? I have an Armalite M4. Any information would be much appreciated.

Generally you shouldn't need to clean them externally. If there's dirt you want to clean off, just use a damp cloth.

The problem with some lubricants is that they damage rubber and plastic, so silicone oil is recommended because it causes no damage to rubber or plastic.

What is the propellant in it? Petro... something or other can eat plastics as well.

I have a can of that; it says it contains petroleum distillates.

basically find silicone lube that is safe for rubber but not in an aeroso can. I know airsoft innovations have some for sale you can use, hell, I used silicone lube from a sexshop a few time and it works just fine
