Myself and other like minded airsofters who attempt to achieve historical accuracy in our impressions frequently wear armor carriers to games, I think plastic plates and foam armor are the most commonly used inserts. I don't mind it, others I know do. Think it's one of those things you just have to try before you knock it.

I used to have a woodland flak vest, never wore it though.
I use an OTV at games, foam padding inside, not only for realism but because theres nothing more rigid than a plate carrier to hold all your mags |

While I don't agree with "Wearing plates because it looks cool" theory, I'll be buying a CIRAS when I get back to Canada in a month, it'll have plates: Plates give the system rigidity which is required for it to fit properly.

Both of my armor vests are real but not because I wanted them that way for airsoft. My Danish flak vest is issue and you can't get anything else like it in non-armor, and my CQB vest has the panels in it back from my Brinks days and I just never bothered to take them out (not like 1000 Cordura would breathe any better without them anyways).

I weir an HSAGI Wasatch with plates. Like the other guys said, plates just make the vest fit better.

In CQB, I ofter wear a real level IIIA vest under my level III + NIJ plate carrier replica. Why so many, well, the real IIIA is superfluous, but I like how it keep me warm in the winter. I also like the bulk for CQB, since I play assault and need to look/feel big.
