Making a 'cool' ghillie suit? As in not roasting in summer
I was wondering if anyone has used a Ghillie suit that had an open backing (basically a wide webbing belt, suspenders, and chest strap) that doesn't use a heavy fabric backing/jacket, so it could be worn over clothes best for the current day's weather. Do you think running a double line of webbing down the arms, and around the chest in a few spots (With tight sewn loops for attaching extra stuff) would work at all? or would it likely be a waste of time?
I not really sure how best to do the legs and boots, but would likely just make them as chaps that strap in several places with webbing and up the hips to the main belt. Just looking at my options (which would mainly be used for paintball till next spring, might get to use it for airsoft this fall if I'm lucky) Has anyone done something that doesn't feel like it is going to kill you on hot summer days? I'm actually surprised that this topic isn't more common on the forum. Apparently lots of people use it, but not that many talk about different ways of making it. Then again, I might just follow the pack and make it the same way everyone else seems to. |

I don't know about the legs. But if you get some netting you can easily make a ghillie poncho that is quite cool.

After I made my BDU ghillie I eventually cut a large hole in the back of the jacket, cut the armpits out and sew'd in OD mesh, cut out the crotch area of the pants and also cut out the top of my boonie. Worked a lot better for cooling, and could still wear a T-shirt under my ghillie.

I think I'm going to try doing the sort of utility harness based suit for now. if it doesn't work I can always sew a jacket to the inside of it, just won't be the ideal order.
Went around to a few garden centers today, and no one carries burlap this time of year, and was told to check back in the fall. Hopefully Co-op will have some, it is about the last local place I can think of to check. If not, well, I'll have it in time to do this as something to do on bad winter days. Winter ghillie is easy enough. Take white blanket, cut hole in middle, tie as needed. |

Well wen i did my sniper training in the swedish airforce we had to do our own ghillies. The easyest way is to only have vegetationstraps on a regular uniform like the swedish M90. The you can atach real grass, leafs and other natural materials to look the same as the enviroment you are playing in.
And after that when you are switchin playground you only switsch the leafs and the grass and so on. This is the best way for a real sniper to work in different enviroment without to have 30 different ghillies. O i almost forgot one thing. When (if) you make a ghillie this way its easyest to take an old jacket in kamoflage and attach a camo net to its backsid and then the vegetation straps on top of the camo net. You have to ecsuse my bad english. But when i went to school i chose to learn pasthu instead of english.
