I wasnt aware that those BB's can leave residue.

What BB's did you use and how dusty were they?

I cut open a CA barrel and found a white floss like deposit which was melted ABS. Something was unusual about the CA surface treatment which was generating enough friction to leave a ABS streak from pellets which regenerated between cleanings. I don't know what else could be said to explain it. Just ditch the barrel and try something better.

What you're describing sounds a lot like teflon tape someone mentioned earlier. Its often used to seal threads. I have that stuff all over the threads on my rifle to get a better air seal and to tighten all the parts so wiggle room is at a minimum.

The stuff starts off like white rubber tape, super fine, thin grips to polished surfaces like you said, almost like glue. when you try to take it out it stretches almost double it's length and especially on threads it flays into fine hairy fibers, although still quite strong and stretchy. I think plumbers use it so it fills the little tiny gaps within the contact points on the threads to make connections watertight.

Works wonders if applied properly to specific parts of BA guns.

It sounds like someone tried to make a custom teflon coated tightbore barrel. :P

I'm pretty sure it wasn't teflon tape as there was no application of PTFE tape in the installation of the barrel. I installed a sample to see if I should carry CA tightbores and found that the pellets left a white streaky deposit on the barrel which returned between cleanings. Lacking a borescope, I sawed the barrel lengthwise to see what the deposit looked like from the side and burned a bit of it (smells can identify plastics) and found it was ABS. Period.

So, MadMax, is it a chemical leaching out of the metal on the inside of the barrel that is dissolving the ABS, or simply the metal itself causing friction and melting the BBs (poor polish job)?

I think the pellets spend too little time in the barrel to dissolve and mark the barrel. If that were the case then the floss wouldn't be flossy, but a liquid goo in the barrel.

I suspect some sort of poor surface quality is causing melting. It's something very fine as the surface doesn't look particularly bad. It could be something hilarious that I didn't notice (or look for) like the barrel is altogether too small in diameter.

I suspect some bad finishing though. The barrel was plated brass.
