I would suggest white tape. The type name escapes me but it's this wide tape that sticks to surfaces nicely but comes off clean...

Or, a roll of gauze. Works for the Russian Army!

Just wrap it around the entire gun. Secure with tape. Almost no messy tape glue to clean up afterwards.

thanks guys

tape sound like a good idea at the moment,but i was certain
there was a non permanent paint we use in the forces.
seems all the paint i have seen in the store requires aggresive
mean to remove

Just use masking tape, it's white enough to work (even if kinda yellow at times) and it comes off clean. Also can use first aid gauze tape, but it costs a lot. I've used cotton gauze but it looks like shit, shifts around and stuff, real pain to use. Best bet would be to go with good quality masking tape and either cover or cut stencils out of it and stick on. If any sticky residue form anything, use lighter fluid on a rag to wipe it all off. Paint easily remains after that untouched (been there, done that.)
