CT and Home Depot both take used/unsafe full size BBQ tanks. I'm not sure about the smaller ones though.
Your local waste transfer station or dump has a hazmat area that you can drop things like this off at. There is a minimum charge of about $5 so if you have anythine else that needs chucking you might as well take that too.

I know that CT and Home depot both take the bigger ones. Try and go there to return them and if you cant try to find a transfer station or a landfill and phone them up I'm sure they can direct you somewhere where you can dump them. (Most places charge you to dump hazardous waste and stuff) so while you're at it and wasting gas driving there why not try to dump some othere stuff lying around the house.

It's actually ok to dispose of EMPTY disposable propane tanks in the trash (hence disposable).
http://dep.state.ct.us/wst/recycle/propane.htm http://www.mass.gov/dep/recycle/hazardous/propane.htm I'd rather put them in the recycled steel bin, but I think it might freak out the recycling depot ppl.

Some tend to light it on fire - if they're an idiot. Not many waste full tanks like that... |
