gas mask sizing?

how does one measure a gas mask?
i have been looking to replace Vietnam era M17 gas mask with some make shift harness and the filters has been clogged as hell, certainly i do not want to get the filters itself out because of the rubber seems a little bit hard to pull it out. so i have been looking at an Israeli gas mask but my googling on how to properly size one, seems to have failed me
anyone care to help?
thanks

Try this:

sizes small to large:-

4.Small = Approximate forehead measurement of 54cm to 56cm

3.Medium = Approximate forehead measurement 56cm to 58cm

2.Large = Approximate forehead measurement 58cm to 60cm

1.Extra Large = Approximate forehead measurement of 60cm to 63cm

if you have a small face, you will use a small gas mask. If you consider yourself to have a large face, you will be a size large.
it's really easy to guesstimate mask size.

Also, having used a gas mask for CQB for quite a while (I also jog on the treadmill with it to train my lungs), DON'T GET THE P.O.S. ISRAELI CRAPMASK

1) Go american or go home, they have the best masks by far
2) The M42 is readily available on ebay, I think it's now obsolete as well so there should be lots
3) Always always always upgrade them to polycarbonate lenses. Just assume no gas mask is even remotely close to be ballistic rated (If you're wearing a mask and get hit by shrapnel, losing an eye or two is the LEAST of your concerns)

You can get polycarbonate sheets from mcmaster carr, to form them, cut them to shape of the old lenses, make a curved die (like from old sheet metal or something), lay the lens on it and heat your oven to 350, as soon as the polycarbonate starts to sag take it out. It'll conform to the mold and set within about 15 seconds.

look on the top of the mask "US" should be in the middle to the side should be
a letter either S M L or XL
that the size of the mask. The only other way to be sized for a gas mask is to be fit tested
if you are using the mask for airsoft only then just get a mask that fits comfortably on your face, and go with what ever mask you think is the best for you.
if you want one that actually offers protection you do need to be fit tested and avoid buying surplus masks especially Israeli masks.
good masks for real protection are American made m 40's ,mcu 2p or m50's
Finnish m95's or British Avon s-10 masks under 10 years old and always buy new cartridges never surplus

^ just to clarify, by "protection" he means from gas. Not BBs.
300fps will crack an M40 lens, and BB's go through S10's like silica BBs through side view mirrors.

Yes ThunderCactus is correct those guidelines are for a mask that offers
breathing protection not protection from airsoft projectiles
if you are looking for an airsoft useable mask I have seen a mask that
resembles the new us military m50 mask with fan motors in it to keep your face cool the mask looks pretty accurate it offers airsoft play protection
but no respiratory protection
