High Torque VS High Speed Gears.
Just recently I learned that I need to put new gears into my gearbox of an ICS M4. I know how to open the gun and all that just fine. I was just wondering what the difference is between High Torque and High Speed gears are. I assume that High Torque gives less RPM but more reliability in the gears whereas High Speed gives higher speeds and less reliability. Can anyone shed some light on the differences for me?

sort of....when a motor turns and its movement is coverted by gears then you open up some options if you alter the gearing ratios.
A "high torque" setup will result in the sector gear spinning "slower" but with more torque/power. That's good and sometimes necessary for high powered springs. Your motor will (or at least should) operate more within its ideal operating parameters and your battery should last longer (vs. a setup that's not geared appropriately to pull a stiff spring). A high speed setup is (largely) the opposite. The sector gear spins faster but with less torque. Good for lightly powered guns when you want a high/large RPM. Reliability only slightly factors into it. Most of the reliability will come from setting the mechbox up right (shimming, etc...). Airsoftmechanics.com has some great write ups on gear ratios. Lots of reading there. |

Thanks for the reply. I have an ICS M4 all Stock right now. Would it be ideal to go with the speed or the torque gears? Im not exactly sure what type of spring in in there.

Just get 'torque' or standard ratio gears for a stock setup.
http://www.airsoftparts.ca/store2/in...roducts_id=611 Those would be your best bet, but they MUST be shimmed well. |

I would say that it's probably best if you go with a High Torque gears, and an M110. Reason being is that it slows down ROF so that you don't really "spray" as much or at leas shouldn't rely on it as much (that's just a personal thought, not like it's based on anything as well because it slows your ROF, if you're in a "spraying" situation it will empty the mag slightly slower so that might be better).
As for thinking about them.... Think about the difference between bike gears (not really the best comparison but it should do). In a "low gear", you pedal fast and it's east to pedal but you don't get that much "power" and might then up going at 5 km/h, whereas in a "high gear" you pedal slower and it's harder to pedal but you get a lot more "power" and thus might be able to get lets say 30 km/h pedalling at the same RPM as when you were in a lower gear. Also, helical gears when shimmed right and with the right motor height will be quieter than "standard" gears not shimmed right and with the motor height slightly off. It will still make noise but not as much.

Im not exactly sure what good shimming is. What exactly is it and can I do it myself?

shimming is the art of shimming your gears so they mesh and align well. There are lots of guilds on youtube if you want to learn. It may look easy but it takes patience and some time to do.

Sweet. Thanks Ghost.
Will these gears work in the ICS split gearbox: http://www.airsoftparts.ca/store2/in...oducts_id=1784 Just wondering because I don't want to order some new gears and have them not work for me. |

you can use any gear set but you need to change your motor pinion gear to use those. ICS use proprietary gears in their guns.

I'm not sure if they will but if they do then the Prometheus ones are helical gears as well.
Also if those work and you're on more of a budget then Modify might be a better bet for gears (they're cheaper gears but the price/performance that you get is great). There's also the Modify Modular Gearset which is marketed as not requiring shimming, basically just drop it in and you're good.

So i should stick with normal gears? Not the angled ones?
How do these look? http://www.airsoftparts.ca/store2/in...oducts_id=1015 Will these ones work well without having to replace anything else? Or am I going to have to replace the gear on the motor no matter what? Last edited by Pyrohair; October 4th, 2010 at 21:14.. |

I've always been a big believer in prometheus double torque helical gears. Work fantastic, never had any issues.
My M249 actually runs with triple torque gears, and it's getting 1350rpm right now, and it's still only at 80% of the motor speed with the 11.1v battery IMO there's no reason to get high speed gears, it's just tougher on your motor. |
