Protecting Thermal Sights

Hey all.

Note: I'm not planning on getting thermals in the near future, but the engineer in me just has gotta get an answer for this or I'm not getting any sleep till I find out.

For those of you with thermals, how do you protect it from bbs? I know Lexan and polycarbonate all severely limit the effectiveness of the sight. I've read that sapphire glass, silicon, and germanium (I know right, what the hell is germanium and where the hell am I gonna get a sheet of it?!) won't drastically reduce the effectiveness, but that's all internet speak, so I take it as a grain of salt.

So that begs the question; for those of you who own these magnificent pieces of kit, how do you protect them (if at all)?

Thanks for helping satisfy my curiousity.

You can't. You need a sacrificial lens that you replace when you break it.
And no poly carbonate, you need a specific lens for the wavelength your imager detects.

Here is an example (out of stock, but price is in this ballpark).

Actually, that's not a bad idea at all mcguyver; a killflash might be a good solution. Hmmm....

Team mates used a CNC'd ARD made from Aluminium. Worked well.

I use an ARD / Steel mesh. It will cut down on the overall effectiveness, but what also cuts down on the effectiveness is a BB shattering your lens
