Problem Motor Cage - AUG
so... just wondering if any of the other docs have run across this before?
gearbox in question is a stock JG Aug V3 replacement (drop in) gearbox . when I initially checked it over, screws were loose, seeing as I was switching out to metal bushings and reshimming it anyways, didn't think much of it it was actually kinda nice not to have to fight with the screws LOL ... anyways, new metal bushings, reshim, check AOE on piston, M120 spring. quick test holding the motor cage in place .. works great but without the 2 last screws in the bottom of the box/through the cage I don't wanna push it... so finish assembly and tighten everything up, fresh 9.6 1400mah nunchuck. spins over but really labored, starts to heat up the battery and wires. thinkin that the stock JG motor sucks ... grab a hi torque motor ... same thing. double check the insides, got it open anyway decide to give a 300% torque up set of gears a shot too. being that this is more of a DMR type build .. ROF isn't a big concern trigger response and ease on the small type battery given the battery confine restrictions. throw it all back together ... it cycles up, but it's not happy, battery starts to get hot again. stop.. swear... let the battery, wiring and myself cool down (lol) .. check it over again inside, recheck shimming .. stick the motor/cage back inplace loose .. fires like a hot damn, and still has a decent ROF, but the motor is loose, and depending where it stops .. it won't start back up again as the motor twists in it's cage and can't give full torque. .. so relieve the spring in the box ... put the motor cage back in place, tighten the screws... annnddddd BIND, BIND, spin up .. labored... wires and battery start to get hot an angry again... let everything cool down (including me.. again lol ) .. loosen the screws for the cage.. and it works again .. but again it'll bind up not being able to throw full torque cause the motor twists ... it's at this time I'm noticing that the cage halves compress fair bit when all is tightened ... and I've come to the conclusion that it's tilting the motor into the gear and messing the meshing up completely ... I thought of adding a couple shims to the cage itself so it doesn't compress, but then the motor is loose in the middle and twists causing a bind... my last idea is to wrap the motor itself with tape so that it resticts the compression of the motor cage, and keeps the motor itself tight. just wondering if anyone has run into this before??? I'm looking around for an nice aftermarket motor cage with better tolerances .... but I need to get this thing running in the meantime and pin point this stocker motor cage as the problem :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

I fixed it! ... atleast for now... the stock motor cage is CRAP ... although I have to admit a part of it was my shimming of the gears... the shimming itself, while all the meshing and engagement was good, my bevel was too "low" .. quick readjustment, and check against the rest of the gears.. yay!..
throw the motor back in place tigthen it down... look at the cage and it's flexing open half way down the motor ..... loosen it back off.. check it .. runs like a top.. slowly increase the tightness of the the screws on the cage and watch the flex... annndddd BIND... stupid cheap motor cage... the solution.. a ziptie... and then a wrap of tape to keep it from slipping off, tighten the screws back down again... low and behold it runs like a top and the battery doesn't start to get warm (warm.. not stupid hot like before) till after like 100 rounds straight pull on full auto. I've only got 45rnd mags the most this thing will see is double taps .. and at most maybe a succesion of 4 or 5 of em... so.. I'm happy now! MUCH BETTER

yeah I was going through that the whole time ... I tested the motor cage outside the box too with a spare box to see if maybe the stock JG rearbox was a little "thin" and it did the same thing... the bottom of the cage was/is deforming ... 3/4 the way down the cage the gap is opening up about .5mm ... pushing the pinion "up" at an angle into the bevel ... restricting the cage from flexing, little tweak of the motor height and it runs like a top ...
I tried 2 different motors in the cage ... in the end I had the gearbox open about 2 dozen times making small single adjustments. when I put the motorcage set from an AK on .. ran great, motor cage set from G36 .. ran great.... stock crappy Aug motor cage... would bind up ... looked around some for another aug motor cage, they seem to be in rather non existant supply, and from what I could see .. an aftermarket "uber" cage was never made... the AK and G36 got the lions share there. I'm gonna see if I can come across a stock TM or CA motor cage ... but until then, It can actually be used and not want to be thrown off a cliff
