Whatever you chose, just remember to wear loose layers for extra warmth and that your boots are not too tight. Try them on with thicker socks to make sure you get the right size.

wow, I want to move to yellow knife now. I am the crazy person that wears runners pants and a Tshirt all year round and I dont feel cold in the -30 to -40 weather.

Winters are no scarier than being in the moutains of Peru. It gets dam cold there too.

Just remeber...layer layer layer.

I camp only in the winter (no bugs).

I keep mutilple boots for winter. Some light hikers for going into the city. some heavier (Solomons - rated for -45) for work. I also have a set of skidoo boots and a set of muckluks with rubber bottoms for snowshoeing.

The big thing is to stay dry. Dry means warmth.

In really cold wx I change socks 2x a day when out on road. I also keep a set of extra boots, mittens, and touque in my truck. I also have a emerg kit for cold weather kept in bag strapped in back. (blankets, fire starter, saw, etc)

@ OP:

If you didn't know Wx is a short form for weather. Used primarily in aviation (or at least thats the only place other than geography class where I've seen that term tossed around).

Seriously though it's not a big deal as Deep in the bush makes it. I wear light pants and a thin wind breaker in the winter but that's because it's Vancouver. In Alberta I just had my ski jacket, a toque, ski mitts, jeans (if really cold will opt for snow pants), and woolies (wool socks) over my feet in hiking boots rated for cold weather. In addition for a base layer you should consider polypropylene "underwear" (long johns and t-shirt), Under armour is the most widely known brand but you can easily go to Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) and buy a set.

For ski gloves/mitts THESE are OK but THESE are better, I personally use the first kind but if it's really cold will opt for the second since your fingers are side by side and will keep you that much warmer.

Initiate yourself. First snow-fall of the year, jump into a snow bank in nothing but your undergarments. Stay in it for about 20 seconds. The rest of the winter will pale in comparison.

Assuming a network tech is an IT job of sorts, you may have some luck. Try the GNWT website, they often have postings for IT stuff. Plus, of course, all the diamond mining companies.

Years ago, my dad was an Auxilliary Mountie, and one winter night he and his partner were goofing around in the detatchment, and had cut out red stars and put them on their fur hats, then goose-step marched around the office. They then got a call-out, and forgot to remove the stars. They got some very strange looks at stoplights for the next few hours.
