Ouch. You're got a nice shipment there. Have your tube of Astroglide ready for when the UPS guy arrives. You're going to get RAPED with brokerage charges.

I outright refuse to deal with anyone that ships UPS only from outside Canada unless the order is under $20, where they can't charge you brokerage fees. And if a seller ships UPS when they were supposed to ship via another method, I'll refuse to accept the package. UPS have fucked me way too many times. I'm never giving them another penny of my money.

Nope. Goes by the total value of the package...

You pay the PST and GST, which go right to the government, any CBSA handling charges (may or may not be applicable), and UPS' ludicrous brokerage and handling fees plus fuel surcharges, etc.. based on the value of the package. I'm not sure their exact formula they use, but it pretty much ends with you bent over, a stiff one up your ass, and no reacharound. And as an extra bonus, they also charge you GST on the brokerage fee as well.

yes there is a way. I don't fully remember the details but basically you need to fill out some paper work to broker it yourself. When one pays a brokerage fee, you are basically paying a UPS employee a ridiculous amount of money to fill in a document.

average wait time at CBSA offices is about 2-3 hours, and they're only open during bank hours so most of you who are gainfully employed are probably better off just paying the fee.

damb postal workers. Did you know that if you put the return address where the mailing address goes and the the mailing address where the return address goes on a letter and happen to forget to put a stamp on it. Then it gets mailed for free! return to sender no postage!

You should be clearing your own products if you are running a business. It's easy. Short answer goes like this:

Have the shipper note on the outside of the carton it will be cleared by you. You need something that can be used as an invoice for customs ... they accept almost anything (eg a printout of an email is perfectly fine with them) but must list quantity, unit price, and total price per item. Haul that down to your local customs office, pay "the 1.35", and haul the paperwork down to UPS. Get your goods handed over or delivered without the brokerage fee.

UPS likes to claim that the brokerage fee "has nothing to do with us" and is paid up front by UPS to the broker on your behalf. Its partly true; it does work that way and they are two separate companies.

What they won't tell you, though, is the broker has only one customer, UPS, and the broker firm is 100% owned by UPS.

So basically for $151 package, it breaks down like this...

Brokerage fee - $29
GST on brokerage ~ $1.75
PST / GST on the $151 value of the package ~$20
$5.85 - Bond fee

Have roughly $50 ready for UPS when they drop off the package if it was shipped UPS Standard. And that's only if the CBSA didn't decide to open / assess your package.

By comparison, it would cost you about $30 in customs / brokerage if the package would have been sent via USPS instead of UPS. Canada Post charge a flat rate of $10 for brokerage fees, regardless of the cost of your package. And that's IF they charge it at all. I've had packages come from abroad where I was planning on $50+ fees and got charged nothing.

I've actually had UPS deliver stuff, charge me at the door for all the fees, and then have the "brokerage company" invoice me again for those same charges by mail, even after I'd already paid the full amount to UPS directly. Even though I had all the proof that I'd paid, they still sent my account to collections because I refused to pay again - the UPS collections department. So it shows that the broker is indeed a UPS owned company. I eventually got it straightened out, but there's no way I was paying all those charges a second time, THEN appeal the decision... assholes. I hate UPS.

Any of them COULD be, just like anything else. They most likely won't though.
