General Maintenance and Gun Care.

Ive been gaming my gun for the past month now, once or twice a week for a solid 4-5 hours each time. Another 3-4 clips inbetween each outing.

Im wondering what kind of maintenance schedule you guys are performing and what you are cleaning/inspecting while the gun is apart?

I have to take the gun apart to replace the spring next week, and was planning to clean the barrel, inspect the hopup, and do a general inspection of the mech box while its open. Re-check the shim job, inspect the bushings, re-grease/lube the mechbox and re-install everything.

Any tips for us new airsoft gun owners for maintenance and general upkeep?

You hit the major points right there. Re-check shimming, ensure no issues with bearings/gears, and regrease and relube everything. And cleaning the barrel and inspecting hop up for any issues/ checking the rubber. Those are the basic things I do on every takedown. I would check your compression as well, by seeing if the piston head makes a good seal with the cylinder. Other than that, if the gun is running smoothly, don't touch anything else. Nothing else really needs any work.
Oh the one other thing to check would be the switch contacts. Just see if any scorch marks are showing up from the electrical arc across it every time you pull the trigger. if there are any, just scrape them off.

I agree. I don't take it apart after every game, I don't relube it after every game. I relube it after maybe 5-10 games, or once a month.
I clean the barrel and hop up/rubber after every game though. Like he said below, easiest way to keep your gun consistent and accurate between games.

What I do after every single game:

-Disassemble(Mind you I have an AK, it only takes like 30 seconds to get to the barrel and hop up unit)
-Take out hop up unit and barrel assembly
-disassemble the entire hop up unit and take out the barrel + hop up rubber(Again, this is an AK, takes only like another 30 seconds lol)
- Wash the hop up rubber with hot water and kitchen detergent(I do this everytime because I'm really obsessive about accuracy)
- Clean the barrel with eyeglasses patches.
-Reassemble

that's about all i do. You don't have to lube the gearbox everytime. And don't put any lube inside your hop up. It will screw with your gun's consistency.

Other than what you already said, I would recommend cleaning the barrel every couple of games. I generally clean my barrels every 2000 rounds or so to make sure there's no dirt or residue. Remember to turn off your hopup completely before cleaning the innder barrel as you can easily tear your hopup rubber.

It's also a good idea to put a couple of drops of silicone oil into your hopup feed tube every few thousand rounds to prevent your rubber from drying out. Fire a couple of mags out of it to blow the excess oil out of the hopup, then you're good to go.

I generally try to get into my mechbox for a checkup and general maintenance every 30000 rounds or so, where I clean and relube everything. I check for wear and replace any part that may need it.

You seem to have the right idea though. You've covered pretty much everything that needs to be done for general mechbox maintenance.

Thanks for the info guys. I have a barrel cleaning rod, but im not sure what to use to clean the rod. You guys mentioned eye patch cloths? Where are you guys getting them from? Is there anyting else more common that may be used as well? Do you put any sort of cleaning solution on the cloths as your cleaning the barrel?

Anything made to not cause microscratches. Like kim wipes if you can get some.

I thought kimwipes were rough and can scratch. I remember using them in a lab and the felt rough to the touch. I think it's got silicon in them.

No offence to Crunchmeister, but please DON'T do this. Hop up rubbers do not dry out, that is only a myth. Oiling the hop up will only fuck with your accuracy and consistency. Trust me on this one.

I dont know if this is the best thing to do but I put a peace of craft felt on the end of my cleaning rod with a few drops of silly oil to clean my barrel the night before a game. And in the off Season/winter I take my mechbox down for a full lube and look over.
