VSR-10 : fps varies from 405 to 445

I own a VSR-10 clone. With the stock hop-up unit and sleeve it used to shoot pretty reliably 410-420 fps.

I have now installed a good pss10 hop-up unit by laylax (the one that allows to use AEG barrels and hop-up sleeves). I have also installed a prometheus 6.03 barrel with it.

Just as a note : the hop-up sleeve that comes with the laylax unit also has a metal cylinder that goes over the sleeve to ensures a very tight air seal (that thing is tight like hell!).

When I tested my rifle on my chrony I got results from 405 to 445 fps. What could be the cause of such variations?

Please note that I use a spring that I had to cut 2-3 rings out of. I would still get a pretty constant fps with it before the hop-up change.

What are the different possible causes to investigate? Thanks!

airseal between the nozzle and the hop up rubber, it's probably not reaching all the way in every time you push back the bolt.

Try firmly pushing back the bolt to the furthest position after everyshot. If that does not work, the position of the hop up unit is too far front(Clone VSRs sometimes have this problem, being imcompatible with aftermarket parts.)

Hope that helps.

did you played in the cylinder, is the piston head's oring greased? had a similar issue with mine... greased the oring and the gun became more consistent...

Good advice but I did that quite a while ago. Haven't opened the cylinder-piston since it became inconsistent.

I'd ask if you've shot the gun with good heavy ammo for distance/accuracy yet. That in itself is a more desirable thing to go for than the red herring velocity variances put out. I know it can be bothersome, but if it shoots quite well while gaming it, I wouldn't worry too much about the variation. I've seen 20-30fps variation in my M24 from one night to another in the past (three nights of testing Bastards, one night 500-520fps, next night, 490-510fps, next 480-495fps............ after that back up to 500-510), couldn't figure it out, so I just ignored it. But the configuration I have now I'll likely to stick with, seems 400fps w/ 0.20g, full hop up and 0.36g washed Bastards are the magic combo for me now for great range and accuracy.

And, it could be your spring since you said you cut two coils off it. Doubt it, but is possible since you introduced an inconsistancy into the set up. Could be lube on the hop up as well, could be a few things actually, but luckily a bolt action spring rifle is very simple to troubleshoot.

could be just breaking in the new hopup that is causing you problems.
