My TM G3 SG1 Rebuild

I just aquired a Tokyo Marui G3 SG1. For free! It does not run at the moment. A friend gave it to me when I asked about it, he is still trying to find certain parts he believes were with it when he got it. So I may not have all parts. The gun was 'put together' by him, gearbox and all. He hasn't seen or worked on an airsoft gun before this. (I have only 'worked' on a cheap -doomed- DE M86 so I really don't have any experience either) So it may not be properly assembled and that could be some of the problem(s). It has nothing other than the gun, battery, a hi-cap, a lo-cap, and the bipod.

I plan on 'rebuilding'/fixing it and using it. I have done some research on it already. V.2 gearbox, EG700 motor, things like that. I'm going to be posting my progress/asking for help with this. I will be posting pictures soon. My

'plans' for this are to fix it cheaply if possible, put it back up to stock level... If things need replacement/I would like to replace something, I will most likely upgrade. It will be things like stronger gears, metal bushings, piston, etc. Things of that nature. If I end up 'reinforcing' it, I may put it up to 320-340 FPS. I will be asking what I should have in order to keep reliability. If reliability will suffer huge amounts then I would like to put it up to 310-320 maybe. I'm not completely sure what the gun shoots stock, from what I've read 265-300. I'd eventually like to use it for a spotter/scout-ish role. Thats just a current 'want' I don't know if thats what I really want yet. I'd like to raise the FPS up more for that role, but I think keeping it lower would increase my reliability. (Aswell, I don't even know if I want/need that extra FPS yet. I really don't know anything yet.) Which I think would be a good idea for a 'noob' like me.

Externally this thing is in rough shape. It is missing certain things like the rear site, butt plate, bipod clip/pin, selector switch(s?), cheek rest (?), a piece on the foregrip (I'm not quite sure what it is, I'll be posting pictures of things like this) and a pin/clip attaching the front portion of the gun to the mechbox assembly. There could be more, that I wouldn't know/haven't noticed. This is just the stuff visable on the body. It is scratched up and 'rough', but nothing looks broken or ripped off the gun. It just looks like regular wear. Thats a good thing... I think...

"Supposedly" all the parts were there when my friend got it. Which I'm sure is not the case. On the inside-ish (Not gearbox yet)... It needs a fuse (Could be reason its not running, seems too simple though...), and 2 screws that hold the grip to the gearbox. The 2 under the 2 that hold the plate onto the grip.

When I looked at the battery I found it to be a 9.6V 1700 mAh NiCad. With an output rate of 25A The stock is a 8.4... I believe the stock output rate is 10A, because thats what the fuse 'case' says. I'm not sure if thats how it works... Thats what I am assuming right now. This lead me to think that perhaps this is upgraded. (It could be why the gun 'broke' in the first place. Maybe the higher ROF has damaged the gears... Or something...) The upgraded part intrigues me. I don't know what the internals are now... And I'm looking for a way to find out. Things like the spring for instance. Will there be a way to find out what it is? Or will it be obvious? What about gears and the other parts of it? Right now I'm looking at the closed gearbox. I can't tell if any parts are aftermarket. It has (what I presume to be) locktight on the screws. It looks like a little to much and it has run somewhat.

I am about to 'open it up' and check it out... I have all the necessary tools I believe.

I will update, and post what is going on/any questions as I go. Thanks for any help! I really need it. Part help is especially needed (What is needed/where I can get it). Remember I'm new to this so more in-depth description may be needed for me. Aswell, airsofter common knowledge may not be known to me as I am not an airsofter... Yet. Comment with anything you think might/could help.

Anyways, off to the gearbox and greater things!

I have fully disassembled the gearbox successfully, without breaking/losing anything myself.

One of the things I should have mentioned with the gun was that I believe its always on safety because the selector switch is missing and the trigger doesn't seem to pull back very much at all.

I noticed that the spring guide has a chip at the base, where it meets the actual gearbox. Some things seemed very loose, which I'm guessing is because the other half of the gearbox is gone. The trigger didn't seemed aligned right, this could have been a problem. I don't think it would trigger the 'switch', it didn't fit right at the top where it pushed the little 'switch' piece that would complete the circuit. It was a little back and up higher than it. Again, could have came off when the other half came off. There was only 1 shim on the entire thing, not sure if that means anything. Plastic bushings, I believe they are bushings anyway. Fully plastic(?) or poly(?) piston, with attached spring. Everything seemed the same as it should be otherwise. (From my knowledge of course.) It seems stock other than the battery. The cylinder is very dirty/grimy, could be the grease used on it. Grime on the piston... Erm... Gears? Spurs? It looks placed though, it is quite precisely on the row of gears on either side of the piston. Could be grease used there.

I want to wash the pieces so I can see wear and make everything alot cleaner. How should I do this? Also what greases and lubricants will I need to replace everything after they have been cleaned? Any particularly good brands for this? Good places to order from, that will be fast to ship and have competitive pricing? How-to's/tips would be helpful. I still have to look for one on here.

Also, I would like to get metal bushings for sure. (They are 8mm I believe, bigger than a BB anyway... Just to make sure... I am talking about the pieces that fit into the sides of the gearbox and shims go next to them. I'm pretty sure they are called bushings.) A shim set. (Shimming is a whole other game... I'll need help with how to do this.) A new spring guide. Possibly piston and head. Maybe new spring aswell. If needed, gears. Might, just to reinforce it. If needed, a new motor. High speed/High ROF not needed, torque would be. I'm not going to be extremely upgrading it though... Actually I'd just like to reinforce it 'all'. So if/when I want to move it to about 360-ish FPS, nothing will be needed but the spring. Maybe I don't need to reinforce everything for that. I don't know.

I'd like to get a 8.4 battery (I do have that 9.6, but I don't know if that will be hard on the AEG. I'd like something that would let me upgrade to a 380ish level eventually, charger for it (With discharger, and automatic 'cut-off') Aswell as the body 'fixes' quite soon. I will be finding parts and ordering this week for that. Next weekend I would like to be ordering gearbox parts for sure.

What would you recommend for mild reinforcing/upgrading? Pricing? I'm pretty flexible price-wise as I was going to buy a new SCAR-L... Actually I still might buy a used one... I love that gun... But yes, any recommendations for gearbox parts/battery/charger? And where should I find the 'body' parts? Can someone send me a list or thread what the restricted items are? (Importing I'm referring to.) Some of the parts I need may be restricted and need to be ordered from somewhere in Canada...

I'm waiting for an answer on how to clean the gearbox and what lube/greases I need before I move on with this. I will be searching for it aswell. Thanks! Any comments or questions are welcomed.

Help troubleshooting the guns problem would be VERY helpful. I'd like to use this 'stock' if possible before reinforcing/upgrading anything.
