j/k.
It's protection from excessive wear. It absorbs shock, softer on the piston, tappet plate, and from each other.

They've been tested to withstand 300,000 rounds in a standard testing environment, and 100,000 rounds under "military standards." I have no idea what "military standards" are as far as airsoft goes, that's just what their marketing hype says.

the bevel gear doesnt cause loss in FPS, all the gears do is pull the piston back, its the spring, spring guide, piston, piston head, cylinder head, cylinder, air nozzle, hop up chamber, hop up sleeve and barrel that affect your shot. If its a full auto problem you AEG may be firing too quickly (firing a BB while the first one hasnt left yet). best thing i can think of without handling the gun is make sure everything is in the right place, and the hop up sleeve isnt damaged.

Aside from all the above, I suspect the mythical "suck back" effect: for M14, i guess if your normal velocity is 400fps (which should give you about 200ft), then it takes only 0.004sec to clear the barrel. However, if your ROF is high enough to exceed 0.004sec per cycle, the piston backward motion would create a negative pressure in the barrel and slow down the BB.

With that being said, I highly doubt myself. But it doesn't hurt to know, right?

Your ROF actually doesn't need to be that high. Don't forget that the BB starts from rest and has to accelerate to speed. It doesn't travel at 400fps from start to finish. As a result, it takes more than 0.004seconds to clear the barrel.

I doubt barrel suck is the issue at hand, here as the volumes haven't changed much. I'm still sticking to an issue with the compression chamber / air seal / loading chamber / hop up areas.

You would need 250 rounds/second to have 1 BB on top of another inside the barrel with that figure.

I'm a firn believer in nozzle engagement being the culprit. Or a damaged hop-up I suppose, but considering gear change.......

OMG this thread just went to shit..

UPDATE:

AEG IS SEMI ONLY
(G&G made Full Auto its secondary selection as all you need to do is remove the full auto
tab and its now semi only which G&G made the Primary selection for this rifle)
Hopup works 100%

Upgrades put in:
G&P SPR Spring 420-430FPS
Hurricane Spring guide
KA 7mm Bushings
Star Gearset (Forgot to tell him not to install em but meh)

Everything on the M14 is bone stock. It fires great and accurate when
no RAS is on. Range is shit for some wild unknown reason hopefully was
just a bad re-assembly as it was his first G&G M14 so no harm no foul its a
learning game. We are putting back in the stock gears and taking more time
than 48hour time period to do it all in.

Range issue:
From the Gears?
From the Nozzle?

Accuracy:
RAS on it carves right so might be bad stress on outer barrel somewhere.. easy fix.
RAS off it shoots straight and doesnt stray for 175ft.

I am no "Gun Doctor" but I have had mine torn down and put back together (and work! LOL) enough to know my way around a gearbox a bit.

The only way I can see gears affecting range/velocity is if the piston is not getting fully cocked. If it's getting released somehow halfway back through the stroke, you are going to get less power and therefor less range (forgive me if the terminology is off).

I am not sure how and undamaged gear set or piston could do that tho. Unless they were completely un-shimmed and so much play the gears would slip under tension. But, in addition to knowing that the guys working on it are switched on, it would make and obvious noise that hasn't been reported here.

Does the motor sound any different on those shots that fall short?

Still seems like an air seal issue to me. Or the hopup is moving from shot to shot?

As for it being wonky with the RAS on. It's got to be tweaking the inner barrel somehow to affect the flightpath. I would suggest it's putting pressure on the hopup so that less spin is getting imparted to the BB, and it's losing that spin at the 150 ft mark, becoming unstable and turning. But even the fact that it's turning consistently is confusing.

illusion has it right, the problem with range is in one of these areas: "compression chamber / air seal / loading chamber / hop up areas.". I fixed a gun 4 months ago with a similar issue and it was a problem with the cylinder head and hop up rubber. So go over these areas with a fine tooth comb.

There's no reason you can't use your new gears, they are totally unrelated to the problem.
