So just to kind of close this thread, as pointed out it was the hammer and disconnector that had worn down to nothing. I ended up replacing the individual pieces in the trigger assembly (which turned out to be very easy) and everything functions as new. Before anyone says it I know this is only a temporary fix until these wear out again. Eventually i'll buy real steal parts. Here are some pictures of the worn pieces just for the sake of it, hopefully this will help someone else. Thanks again to all who posted helpful replies.
