Quoted for TRUTH, been to too many games where this is happened, you end up with 3-4 veterans dressed for the PMC role and 25 noobs that haven't a clue what they're doing

Dress
does not make the man..
but it does establish an impression. Show up dressed in Civies , white running shoes and a PB mask.. mags stuffed in your back pocket .. people will form an impression of you and treat you accordingly. Regardless of how wrong or unfair that perception is .. it is none the less thier truth. it's ok to not break the bank when you get started ... but it's not ok to not bother trying at all. Basic Minimal gear is not expensive... and will enable you to be more effective and consequently have more fun in your early experiences. It will also reduce the likelyhood that the more experienced players will write you off as a tourist on day one.

The whole linchpin of this is to have the most realistic copy of a firearm as possible. Getting that in your hands and then showing up in the woods with a G-Unit loadout isn't going to make the impression you're hoping for.
Once you're part of the scene (it doesn't take long for that to happen either) then you can workup oddball rigs like a video game character or urban terrorist. We have a local guy in OD army surplus and black boots and he's very effective.
