I think it looks like a couple pieces of piping bolted together, and something else that I can't quite pin down... they've just never looked good to me. But that could just be me. I've seen it on a couple guns, and it always makes the gun look too long, once it even looked like the stock was bending down, as if it were too heavy to remain lined up with the top (imagine ^ only more shallow).
