Once the lower receiver is off, THEN you can go through the process of sliding the mechbox out of the upper receiver, but until you get the lower off, you're going to break things if you force it. The tabs are always the easiest and first things to break.
You still need to carefully slide the gearbox out of the upper. The bushings will hook on to the metal tabs (if you still have them on.) You'll need to carefully wedge a flat head screwdriver under the BASE of the tab and lift it enough so that the bushing can pass under. DON'T lift the tabs from the end of it or you'll risk snapping it off. You have to do it from the base.
