I am not learning Japanese, but I am learning Chinese, but thought I'd ask if Japan ever went the same route as China did with pinyin.
Mind you, I got to be honest, for a typical mono-tone bai gui, who has a hard time pronouncing the tones of each sound. I find learning the Chinese written much easier then the tones. The wife is teaching me mainly simplified, but there is some traditional she has thrown in to help since most printed materials in Toronto are still in Traditional (as is Kanji, I believe).
