It's simple, you better replace a piston than an entire gear set is because if you choose to use a full metal piston, you will risk breaking your gear faster than regular plastic piston ( or poly, something like that ) ; moreover, a piston is like 20 $ or 30 $ for a quality one but back to a gear set cost you about 100 $ to 200 $ for a quality one.

unless you are getting a quality steel gear and your piston is pot metal so then risking breaking piston is higher than a steel gear set but I'm still not recommend that.
