KWA Orange tip removal (KWA M1911)

Alright, so I just got that 1911, Works like a charm (despite the fact that i can only get roughly 2 shots from it being so cold at the moment) My main concern is the 'painted' Orange tip, its been done over with a black paint marker, but it still looks like the guns slide tip was dipped into a barrel of molten gorilla ass.

What i've heard :

1 KWA tips are 'really' hard to remove, so sanding and repainting is the best bet.

If so, what paint should I use to repaint the slide? I dont have a working airbrush at the moment. But I do have access to Krylon/Rustoleum paints.

This is the least wanted option

2 Regular 'nail polish' removers work.

I've only seen this said once or twice, but i'm concerned about destroying the matte black finish beneath the slide.

More preferred method

3 Any other suggestions?

If theres any KWA owners out there that've successfully redone their 1911/glock or whatever. please help!

Thanks.

KWA REALLY cakes it on. It's not just a thin paint you can scratch off, it's actually some kind of plastic glued on. I would not expect there to be a nice finish underneath even if you got it off without ruining it so you'll probably have to paint it anyways. I I have yet to remove the orange on my KWA USP. However, I was at a game last Sunday and some guys told me I can safely use nail polish remover as the slide is metal. If it was a plastic slide there would be issues with using nail polish remover, however it's not a concern with metal. I'm not sure if your KWA 1911 came with metal slide stock or not but a lot of KWAs do.

Alright, wonderful! Two points for nail polish. The slide is 100% aluminum. Buuut the frame of the pistol is plastic. All will be disassembled once the time comes for the nailpolish.

Hate to go off topic, but.
How is the USP by the way? I've heard some nasty things about it. Would've been my choice over the 1911 had the reveiws been better.

I love it. I've put well over 1000 rounds through it and other than a couple double-feeds I've never had a problem. The only bad thing I've heard is about KSC/KWA USP mags leaking but I have 2 that are both leak-free. It's a beast too. It's quite accurate indoors (outdoors it has issues with wind like any other pistol), it's solid and you can't beat the price with a metal slide.

Well I just tried the 'nail polish' idea on my M4 tip, it's metal but yeah it does work and the matte black finish underneath is untouched :)

Whats the technique you guys are using with the nail polish remover? Let it soak for a while? Scrub it off? I've got to de-orange my KWA P226 PTP...

I think the best bet would be to pour some of it into a bowl or whatever and have the end of it standing up in it for a bit, 30 mins to an hour, I'm not sure what you would do after that though, if it'd come right off or what.. Anyone?

Acetone bath and a good scrub had almost no effect on that stuff. I just sanded it and repainted it with a black spray paint, made for use on metal. She's a black beaut now :D

I'm hoping not to have to resort to sandpaper but it might come to that.

If it is metal try automotive break-fluid.
Worked pretty well on my metal flash hiders and WA infinity outer barrel to remove the orange paint.
Pour some of it into a bucket, bowl or something like that and leave it there for a day or two. (Some people say couple hours is enough, but for me it only worked after few days)
I left mine soaked for few days and then I just used a rough sponge to remove the paint since it pretty much start to peal right off :)

But i am not sure this would work on plastic or damage the matte black finish beneath the slide.

If you're really having trouble removing the tip, you could always buy a metal barrel. You said the frame was plastic, and the slide was metal. Is the barrel metal too?

Arthraxis July 19th, 2008 13:53

What would a metal barrel do? This is on the slide.

Maybe he was going to suggest getting a new slide + outter barrel upgrade kit. I think I saw one on airsoftparts.ca

By the way, I have the KWA USP .45 and I gave up trying to get rid of the orange tip.

I gave up buying a KWA UPS .45 because I heard it is a bitch to remove that orange tip LOL

By the way, rexdlu have you tried using break fluid to remove the paint?
