hey winnipegers......surplus stores?
I remember there being a big surplus store on a corner right downtown....but on doing a google search think that one may be closed.
Are there any places a visitor to the city should check out? thanks, Renee |
SIR (now Cabellas') bought their stock when they closed. But I'm sure most of it's gone now.
There are quite a few surplus stores in small towns outside the city, but my brain has been turned off today (it's Monday) so I'm at a loss at recalling in-city stores. |
Imagine games has a small surplus area. Bought my tac harness and helmet there!

The one downtown it completely empty.
Can't think of any others, except for one on the highway that didn't have very much at all. Cabelas is the bastard child of a surplus store and Wal-Mart. |
Mhm, United Army Surplus has been gone since august last year when they declared bankruptcy. They didn't really have much in the line of surplus unless you counted mildew-infested expired flak jackets or off-color bdu's :D
And yeah, cabela's isn't so much of a surplus retailer. They do have some nice TS/US Woodland BDU's and some UTG ACU/Black gear, but that's about it. |
Ahh, fellow Winnipegers.
The downtown one was indeed Army Surplus. But None of the outfitting stores that are located in town shut down because of bankruptcy. Cabelas was on the verge of merging with S.I.R. and they wanted all competition nullified so they bought everyone out. I believe that Wholesale Sports on St James and Wellington is the only other major outfitting store left in town other than Cabelas/S.I.R. Definately check that location out. BUT, dont expect too much in the way of airsoft, since they have an even poorer selection than Cabelas/S.I.R. but you can see some nice real handguns in there. |
Wholesale sports is more into real outdoorsman-type-shit like deer hunting and fishing.
both of which i enjoy greatly and do as much as i can. OO is a way better outdoor store than SIR was, and Cabelas is. The people there actually know their stuff, whereas the customer service at SIR sucked, and it sucks as Cabelas too. People don't know jack all there, with the exception of the Airsoft guys. Even then, i had to wait a couple weeks cause they lost a box of 54 tf-7's. straight up lost. i ended up being so frustrated i just gave up on it altogether. |

does Wholesale Sports have handgun supplies too? I'm looking for some pachmayr grips?
When I visit the city, I have very precious little free time, since I'm there for work. I've eaten at a cool place called Earls....the meat there was goooooood. |
try corporate secutity supply... i love it in there, im like a kid in a candy shop!they sell mainly tactical equip, vests, bags, cloths, boots and more

OK, can't take it any longer, been many years since I was there but I'll presume the strip malls haven't fully marched over the core.
Start out around the forks, lots going on there kind of a tourist spot. Some good food but places tend to come and go there so I'm adverse to naming names. You can consider the Osborne Village. Carlos and Murphy's is a place for semi-Mexi and then down the street to Baked Expectations for dessert. The Exchange district has some bars and upscale restaurants but some people don't like that hood after dark. Also you can head down Corydon for a bit of an Italian vibe. |
i was at cabellas there were some pretty good AEG's there but most of them were pretty shitty the only ones worth looking at there were probably the
Aftermath kraken and the TF9 (MP7) replica. And the like somebody already said the handys are pretty good. i got a CO2 taurus there it was pretty good 380 fps and a great feel |

The only thing that Cabelas has that is decent is the SW40F. It functions like a real gun and is sweet and all, but its crap clear again.... so 120 buck aint going to you Crapbelas... (They selection for airsoft even blows in Cabelas grand forks location.. so what do we expect) And Flea-ish, what is OO? |

Plus Portage has some decent girls walking around (only when its very bright out, haha) But if you think about it, that location is right in the middle of everything, you would think the land would be worth a little. Its an eyesore.. It'll be good to see it gone. |
so i'm here......we're staying at the Inn at the Forks...pretty cool place. Ate at the Spaghetti Factory this evening...then upstairs to Finn McCue's for beers all night. Not a bad deal.
Been great weather so far. |
Portage has it's rough areas Contradiction, and downtown Winnipeg as a whole isn't an ideal place for businesses. The taxes are high, business is low and you always run the risk of vandalism near by. Personally, I avoided Portage after 7 whenever possible (excluding the Forks, as that was always a pretty place to hand out).
I'm quite glad that old Army Surplus store's land is bought by the UofW, as that university will hopefully help lively up the area with more students in the area. |
