but I need to do some reasearch.. are the Osprey books any good? are there other sources online for basic research? |
Gordon L Rottman makes some great information on equipment used during the period.
North Vietnamese Army Soldier 1958-75 (Warrior): Gordon Rottman, Brian Delf: 9781846033711: Amazon.com: Books US MACV-SOG Reconnaissance Team in Vietnam: Amazon.ca: Gordon Rottman, Brian Delf: Books US Army Long-Range Patrol Scout in Vietnam 1965-71: Amazon.ca: Gordon Rottman, Adam Hook: Books Those are examples of books I read. At the library if you get a chance to read, look for the VIETNAM EXPERIENCE hardcover. |

I recommend this book. Covers a lot. Tonnes of photos and gets unit specific ( e.g. Company E , 75th Infantry, "Riverine Rangers," 3d Brigade , 9th Infantry Division Tan An, 1969 "Parakeet Mission" ) A very good resource for enthusiasts, collectors and reenactors. The author is also a ex army and also sells authentic kit on ebay. I bought my NVA / VC rucksack from this fellow. |

Hi Brian.
I'm not sure if I am waking a dead thread, but in case you still have an interest in gaming Nam, you might want to consider an ANZAC impression. Aussie Digger Militaria carries the uniforms (repro and issue). The regular grunts of the RAR and RNZR (the Anzacs adopted the US term) first wore a uniform similar to the late ww2 British jungle uniforms, and then went over to the "Pixie" uniform (the trousers were fairly tight). They used a mixture of p37, p44 and US 56 webbing, with the p37 either in original khaki or dyed green. A jungle hat similar to the old CF bush cap was worn in the field. Sterlings, L1A1 SLRs, M16s and M60s for small arms. The Australians adopted black high boots very similar to the older CF ones (they based them on Canadian issue boots). US jungle boots or British ammo boots with black gaiters (also available at ADM) can also be used for footwear. If you prefer something more exotic, you can get set as Australian SAS. Like their US special forces counterparts, they wore a mix of everything, especially Tiger Stripe and ERDL. Many retained their FNs, albeit often without the flash suppressor. Cheers, Peter |
I'm picking up bits and pieces, slowly, got a lot on my plate on theWWII side right now

Remember that other nations allied themselves with the US... Aussie/Kiwis
